Demographic questions are an optional survey setting that allows participants to provide their details directly within the survey, removing the need to set up participants in Entromy prior to the survey launch. While we recommend uploading user demographics as part of the participant file prior to launching a survey, there are scenarios where this might not be feasible. In such cases, demographic questions can serve as an effective alternative to gather essential participant information.
Accessing and Enabling Demographic Questions
Go to your survey setup and click on Questions > Demographic Questions.
To include demographic questions in your survey, enable the feature by checking the box labeled "Enable Questions" in the top left corner of the page.
Choose when you would like participants to answer these questions:
At the start of the survey: This ensures higher completion rates.
At the end of the survey: This may be less effective as participants may abandon the survey after answering the main questions.
Adding Specific Questions: Click the green "Add Demographic Questions" button to select the specific details you want participants to provide. This might include fields like age, gender, location, role, or other relevant attributes.
You can choose if you want to make those demographic questions required or optional by ticking the box in front of each question.
To guide participants through the demographic section, you can customize the self-registration page by adding:
Self-registration Caption: A short explanatory note that appears at the top of the self-registration page.
Introduction: Instructions or context to help participants understand the importance of providing accurate demographic information.
These additions can increase clarity and encourage participants to complete the section.
Best practises:
To ensure respondents complete demographic questions, it is recommended to position them at the beginning of the survey and make them mandatory when possible. Placing demographic questions at the end of the survey, particularly as optional fields, increases the likelihood of incomplete responses. Participants may exit the survey after answering other questions, skipping the demographic section and potentially leading to incomplete or less reliable reporting.
How to translate demographic questions
The Auto-Translate feature allows you to automatically generate or update translations for survey content after adding new questions or modifying the English text. This helps save time and ensures consistency across multiple languages.
How to use Auto-Translate
Click the “Auto-Translate” button:
Locate the Auto-Translate button at the top right corner of the survey setup page. After adding new questions or making changes to the English text, click this button to start the translation process.
Select Languages to translate:
A modal will appear, allowing you to choose the languages for which you want translations. Keep in mind that using the Auto-Translate feature will overwrite any existing translations already in place. Once you confirm your language selection, the system will begin translating. A progress indicator will display the status of the translations.
Best practices
Use Auto-Translate immediately after adding new questions or modifying the English text to keep translations up-to-date.
Regularly review translations for cultural and contextual accuracy, especially when communicating with diverse audiences.
Error handling
If the system cannot generate translations for all selected languages, it will display a clear error message.
For specific language failures, you can manually adjust translations or retry the process.
